Featured in TIR Episode 325 (Part 2 of 2): Saxophonist and composer Thomas Lockett, an original member of one of the most talented, beloved and bad-ass funk bands of the 1970s and 1980s – Dayton, Ohio’s Slave. The group’s gifted musicians also included late, great bassist Mark Adams and guitarist Mark Hicks; multi-instrumentalist Steve Washington; horn player Floyd Miller; and later on, drummer-singer Steve Arrington, guitarist-singer Curt Jones and keyboardist Sam Carter – the latter four have all been featured on past TRUTH IN RHYTHM episodes.
Slave’s classic jams include “Slide,” “Just a Touch of Love,” “Stellar Fungk,” “Just Freak,” “Volcano Rupture,” “Watching You,” “Wait for Me,” “Stone Jam,” “Snap Shot,” “Baby Sinister” and “Sizzlin’ Hot.” Some of Slave’s members went on to more success with acts like Aurra & Steve Arrington’s Hall of Fame. Here, Lockett discusses the group's history, challenges and important legacy.

She was responsible for looking after Parlet and the Brides of Funkenstein during their U.S. and overseas tours and press appearances. James also worked Parliament-Funkadelic's 1979-1980 tour and added vocals to several P-Funk recordings.
She also shares her early experience working for the Temptations' Dennis Edwards and later in life working for actress Janet Leigh.
