Featured in TIR Episode 166 (Part 1 of 3): Bassist-singer-composer Lonnie Marshall, also known as Mega-Nut, who is the founder and leader of the wild and woolly funk band Weapon of Choice. Heavily influenced by Parliament-Funkadelic, he conceptualized the group’s so-called Nutmeg grooves that were first heard on its 1994 debut album. That was followed by more than a half-dozen Weapon of Choice and Lonnie Marshall albums -- all of them refreshingly quirky, fun and superfunky. 
Having also performed and recorded with greats like George Clinton, Fishbone, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chaka Khan and Ice Cube, Marshall is still bringing amazing music to the masses. This year has been marked by digital re-releases of Weapon of Choice’s catalog as well as a new album called Cosmic Relief, Groove Healing & Verbal Remedies.
Here he covers the gamut, including his guitarist brother Arik Marshall, P-Funk heroes, growing up on the streets of Los Angeles and lots more.

She also contributed to several other acts under the umbrella of bandleader-producer Roger Troutman, including his solo albums and those by Bobby Glover, The Human Body, Sugarfoot from the Ohio Players and Shirley Murdock. 
In recent years, along with other original band members, she has performed under the name Zapp Anthology -- continuing to bring revered favorites to fans like “More Bounce to the Ounce,” “Dancefloor,” “Heartbreaker,” “I Can Make You Dance,” “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” and “Computer Love.” Those are certainly among the all-time most beloved jams.
Here she talks about being the only female member of Zapp, meeting and sharing stages with all the funk and soul greats, what made Roger Troutman tick, and lots more.

First bursting onto the radar of adventurous music lovers in 1990 with the eclectic bluegrass-meets-jazz fusion of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, he would go on to not only perform on more than a dozen Fleck albums but also establish himself as a top-shelf solo artist and collaborator. With music that spans jazz, funk, rock, soul, world music and more, Wooten has captured five Grammys and is a three-time recipient of Bass Player magazine’s Bass Player of the Year Award. 
As if that was not enough, he is also an educator and inspiration to aspiring musicians everywhere. Here he covers his mighty career, with particular insights about his youth and early career with the Wooten Brothers and he even breaks out a bass for a short funk lesson!

The group, which was discovered and produced by Philadelphia recording icon Bunny Sigler, is best known for its chart-topping 1979 funk classic, “I Got My Mind Made Up (You Can Get It Girl).” 
However, there is much more to their story as Instant Funk released seven albums from 1976 to 1983. Its members also contributed to many other well-known artists’ recordings. Those include Lou Rawls, the O’Jays, MFSB, Curtis Mayfield and Evelyn “Champagne” King.
Here, Miller recounts the flurry of activity the group enjoyed during its heyday, what it was like to walk among the Sound of Philadelphia's music giants, Instant Funk's albums and best songs, performances and tours, and what ultimately became of the band.
