Featured in TIR Episode 135 (Part 1 of 2): Danish bassist Ida Nielsen, best known as a member of Prince’s New Power Generation and 3rdEyeGirl bands, but also an increasingly prolific artist in her own right. That includes five solo albums since 2008, with her latest, 02022020, released earlier this year. That record is a mellow departure from her customary funk and danceable grooves.
Here she shares her musical life with and apart from Prince, describing what it was like performing with arguably the greatest musician of all time. She also offers assurance that her next album will be a return to funk grooves and slap bass.

Featured in TIR Episode 133: Funk guitar giant Dennis Coffey. Already an experienced session player, by the late 1960s funk guitar icon Dennis Coffey became a member of the Funk Brothers studio band.
He played on dozens of recordings for Motown Records, and introduced a hard rock guitar sound to Motown record producer Norman Whitfield's recordings, including distortion, Echoplex tape-loop delay, and wah-wah; most notably heard on "Cloud Nine," "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)" and "Psychedelic Shack" by The Temptations. He played on numerous other hit records of the era including No. 1 singles like Edwin Starr's "War," Diana Ross & The Supremes' "Someday We'll Be Together" and Freda Payne's No. 3 hit (No. 1 in the U.K.) "Band of Gold."
In 1971, Coffey recorded "Scorpio," a million-selling instrumental single that peaked in the U.S. at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart and at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The instrumental track featured former Motown "funk brother" Bob Babbitt on bass. On Jan. 8, 1972, Coffey became the first white artist to perform on TV's Soul Train, playing "Scorpio." That record received a gold disc awarded by the Recording Industry Association of America in December 1971.
The follow-up in 1972 was "Taurus," both credited to Coffey and the Detroit Guitar Band. Since then, he has recorded several solo albums, most of them for the Sussex and Westbound labels. While at Sussex Records, Coffey arranged and produced along with Mike Theodore the million-selling "Nice To Be With You" by the group Gallery. In addition, Coffey scored the blaxploitation film, Black Belt Jones (1974).
Coffey was interviewed in the 2002 film, Standing in the Shadows of Motown, which told the story of Funk Brothers and explained that he had sold his Fender Stratocaster to buy a Gibson Firebird after he heard Eddie Willis of Funk Brothers play it during a Motown session. In 2004, he published a memoir, Guitars, Bars and Motown Superstars. Coffey was inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame as a member of the Funk Brothers in 2010 and as a solo artist in 2018.
He recounts most of it here, as well as his still active performing schedule and 2019's jazz album, Down by the River.

Featured in Episode 131: A funk guitar giant who was one of the founders of the monumental Meters out of New Orleans -- the legendary Leo Nocentelli (via phone). Although the band and its unique gumbo of rhythm and soul never crossed over with monster hits or sold millions of albums, their enduring influence as a touchstone of funk music’s foundation is undeniable.
Starting out in the 1960s as Allen Toussaint’s house band, the Meters released eight studio albums from 1969-1977. They were chockful of predominantly instrumentals that were often extremely catchy and usually supremely funky. Some of the band’s better known songs were “Sophisticated Cissy,” “Cissy Strut,” “Look-Ka Py Py,” “Chicken Strut,” “The World Is a Bit Under the Weather,” “People Say,” “Hey Pocky A-Way,” “Africa,” “Fire on the Bayou” and “Funkify Your Life.”
The Meters were musicians’ musicians and as such backed many of contemporary music’s biggest names in the studio or shared time on stage. That list includes Robert Palmer, Dr. John, Patti LaBelle and in the mid-1970s they were invited guests as opening act for the Rolling Stones. Since breaking up in the late 1970s for the past several decades the band members have performed and recorded together in myriad combinations, as well as worked as ace session players with a who’s who of popular music stars. Some of the other diverse artists Nocentelli has worked with include Otis Redding, Joe Cocker, Etta James, Albert King and Jimmy Buffet.
Nocentelli continues to play with several different bands on a regular basis as well as doing one-offs and making guest appearances. With The Meters having won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 just in the rearview mirror; the comprehensive 6-CD box set, The Meters: Gettin’ Funkier All The Time – The Complete Josie / Reprise & Warner Recordings (1968-1977) just released; and upcoming shows including a June 2020 birthday date with Zapp ahead, Nocentelli shares his fascinating story.
