Featured in TIR Episode 328 (Part 2 of 2): Trumpet and trombone player Marvin Pierce, who helped hold down the powerful horn section for one of the baddest funk & soul bands of all time -- the magnificent Ohio Players!
Joining the group at the outset of their Westbound Records emergence and remaining a core member during the rise to superstardom on Mercury records that began with 1974’s sizzling-hot Skin Tight album, he stayed on through the early 1980s. That period included classic tracks like “Jive Turkey,” “Heaven Must Be Like This,” “Fire,” “I Want to Be Free,” “Fopp,” “Love Rollercoaster,” “Sweet Sticky Thing,” “Who’d She Coo?” “Far East Mississippi” and “Body Vibes.”
Pierce then left music behind to become a successful businessman specializing in technology for the golfing industry. In 2010, he co-founded Melbourne, Australia-based GPS Golf Solutions. Here he covers the Ohio Players' entire history, from rise to fall and everything in between.

Featured in TIR Episode 326 (Part 2 of 2): Texas-based blues-rock guitar slinger, singer and multi-instrumentalist Lance Lopez. Inspired by giants like Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Billy Gibbons and Johnny Winter, he’s released nine albums since his 1998 debut – including 2023’s fantastic Trouble Is Good, which was named one of FUNKNSTUFF’s Top 10 Rock & Blues Albums of the Year.
Though he might not be a household name, Lopez’s gritty tone and fretboard agility are prominent in an incendiary, emotive playing style that places him among today’s best hard-edged, blues-rooted guitarists. He also talks about his surprisingly close friendship with superstar Prince.
Having shared stages with the likes of Steve Vai, Jeff Beck, ZZ Top and Joe Bonamassa, he has also worked with Supersonic Blues Machine, Eric Gales and Buddy Miles. Speaking of which, coming up on March 1st, he is among the performers at For the Love of Buddy Miles Tribute Concert in Dearborn, Mich.
