Since debuting as a teenager in 1981 after signing with Warner Brothers Records, she has released four albums under her own name and provided vocals for a cavalcade of other artists. They include the Brecker Brothers, George Duke, Brownmark, Bobby Brown, Celine Dion, Freddie Jackson, Shanice, Slapbak, Aaron Hall, Ricky Martin, George Benson, Ralph Tresvant, Rod Stewart, Sheena Easton, Jeff Lorber, Whitney Houston, Nancy Wilson, Lionel Richie, Britney Spears, Cher and Christine Aguilera.
In keeping with her Minneapolis roots, she brushed with being a Prince protégé and wound up collaborating extensively with Jesse Johnson. Here she dishes on the entire Minneapolis music scene as well as her successful singing brother Carl Carwell, George Clinton, P-Funk and funk music in general.

Featured in TIR Episode 194: Guitarist Jerome Ali, who along with his bass-playing twin brother, Jimmy Ali, has most notably recorded on various P-Funk projects dating back to 1979. They were officially members of Parlet's touring and studio band, but also recorded with Parliament, Funkadelic and other acts associated with George Clinton's empire.
Throughout the ensuing years, the brothers also shared the stage with Carlos Santana, Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Earl Klugh, Buddy Miles, the Doobie Brothers, Ronnie Laws, Bob James, Angela Bofill and Lonnie Liston Smith. The pair has most recently performed the Las Vegas circuit as The Brothers Ali. Here Jerome fills in the details and blanks from the 1970s to current day.

Featured in TIR Episode 193, Part 2 of 2: Robin Russell, drummer and composer for the seminal Detroit-based soul-funk collective consisting of the Nite-Liters and New Birth. He played with both beloved acts as the former became the instrumental foundation for the latter’s vocalists and combined to release more than a dozen classic albums during the 1970s.
Nine of those albums entered the R&B Top 40 and from those albums the group charted 10 Top 30 R&B singles. Those hits included “It’s Impossible,” “K-Jee,” “I Can Understand It,” “It’s Been a Long Time,” “Wildflower” and “Dream Merchant.” At the same time, the ensemble became famous for its powerful live performances.
Here he not only talks about those experiences but also playing with Little Richard, Johnny "Guitar" Watson and others. Russell also shares his 15-year stint playing drums for Mother Nature and delighted passersby at Los Angeles' Griffith Park.
