Featured in TIR Episode 201, Part 2 of 2: Saxophonist for innovative funk originators and extraordinary band regardless of genre -- Sly & the Family Stone’s Jerry Martini! He was a founding member of the groundbreaking multiracial, multigender group that released seven albums from 1967 to 1973, with 14 top 30 R&B singles and nine top 40 pop songs.
Their stylistic diversity and songcraft ranged from pounding funk like “Thank You (Fallentin Me Be Mice Elf Agin)” and “Loose Booty” to anthems like “Everyday People” and “Stand!” to infectious midtempo songs like “If You Want Me to Stay” and “Family Affair” to breezy melodic tracks like “Hot Fun in the Summertime.” Yet some of the best were deep album tracks like “Thank You for Talking to Me Africa” and “In Time.”
Martini would go on to play with several other artists, including Graham Central Station and Prince, and has continued to perform with other original Family Stone members to keep that hallowed legacy alive.
