Featured in TIR Episode 209, Part 2 of 2: Iconic R&B and funk musician, singer, composer and producer Charles Wright -- best known as leader of the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band and its classic tune, “Express Yourself.”
Starting in 1967, the group released five grooving albums and Wright added four more under his name through the mid-1970s. Among the other hits were “Do Your Thing,” “Till You Get Enough,” “Love Land” and “Your Love (Means Everything to Me).” Right up through recent years Wright has continued to perform and record, as well as pen his autobiography, called “Up From Where We’ve Come,” and even hosted a TV show.

A child prodigy, she progressed through musical academics and was inspired by players like Dennis Chambers, Dave Grohl, Questlove and Maurice White among many others.
Her big break came as a member of superstar Beyonce’s all-female touring band, the Suga Mamas. She then immersed herself in New Orleans funk and became a member of Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, before settling into her present soulful trio known as The Nth Power. Among her many other credits is touring with funk giant Maceo Parker. She has and continues to sit in and jam with hundreds of amazing musicians.

Most notably, he worked with George Clinton and P-Funk during the late 1970s and early 1980s, performing on albums by Parliament, Bootsy’s Rubber Band, Parlet, Brides of Funkenstein, Sweat Band and the Horny Horns.
Among the R&B stars Small played with were Enchantment, Five Special, the Dramatics, Was (Not Was), R.J.’s Latest Arrival, Michael Henderson, David Ruffin and Mariah Carey. He then went on to appear on scores of West Coast gangsta rap tracks, including those from Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg and Kurupt, and he continues to record today.
