Playing rhythm and solos behind Rick James in studio and on stage, he appeared on most of James’ late 1970s and 1980s albums as well as three Stone City Band records and several others by Teena Marie, Mary Jane Girls and Val Young.

Bringing Prince into his own band called 94 East, he schooled the eventual superstar genius on rehearsing, song construction, arranging and the business of music.
Combining synthesizer, rock and jazz elements with funk and R&B, and having also influenced other young aspiring local musicians like Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Morris Day, Andre Cymone, Matt Fink and Bobby Z, Pepe has been referred to as the Godfather of the Minneapolis Sound. He remains active today through Pepe Music and its Reo Deo label, and in 2020 released his autobiography titled, “If You See Me Now: My Six-Decade Journey in Rock and Roll.”

During that period, the group recorded more than a dozen successful albums – at their peak having four straight reach No. 1 R&B, and that included 23 Top 25 R&B singles and 16 Top 40 pop hits. Among those songs and other favorites were “I Feel Sanctified,” “Machine Gun,” “Slippery When Wet,” “This Is Your Life,” “Sweet Love,” “Gimme My Mule,” “Fancy Dancer,” “Just to Be Close to You,” “High on Sunshine,” “Brick House,” “Easy,” “Zoom,” “Funky Situation,” “Too Hot to Trot,” “Three Times a Lady,” “Sail On,” “Still,” “Old-Fashion Love,” “Lady (You Bring Me Up” and “Oh No.”
