Featured primarily on bass and guitar while touring and recording extensively with the NPG from 1987-1993, he can be heard on amazing Prince records like Sign 'O' the Times, the Black Album, Lovesexy, Graffiti Bridge, Diamonds and Pearls and The Love Symbol Album.
Having also worked with related acts such as Sheila E, Madhouse, Rosie Gaines, Brownmark, the Time, Mavis Staples and George Clinton, he presently serves as the musical director and lead guitarist for a musical collective called The Purple Ones that honors the Minneapolis Sound’s legacy.

Featured in TIR Episode 268 (Part 2 of 2): Guitarist Omar Mesa, best known as an original member of one of the all-time great funk-soul bands, Mandrill. Along with the Wilson brothers at its core, he shined with the group during its ascent and peak from 1970-1973.
That included the band’s self-titled debut, Mandrill Is, Composite Truth and Just Outside of Town albums that spawned tracks like ”Git It,” “Ape Is High,” “Hang Loose,” which went to No. 25 on the R&B chart, “Fencewalk,” which went to No. 19, “Mango Meat,” and “Two Sisters of Mercy.”
Incorporating jazz and Latin musical elements, during that period Mandrill also gained acclaim as one the most original and fierce live acts. Having left the band in the mid-1970s, Mesa has continued to play, record and live life on his own terms. His new single is titled, “I Love the Way You Read My Mind.”

Carter, who often collaborated with his horn-playing brother Charles (a.k.a. Cedell), contributed to such seminal albums as Slave’s “Show Time” in 1981 – which has just been reissued (https://iconoclassicrecords.com/album/show-time/) – and Steve Arrington’s Hall of Fame 1983 debut. The former included classic songs like “Snapshot” and “Wait for Me,” while the latter included top-tier tracks like “Way Out,” “Nobody Can Be You But You” and one of the all-time favorite jams, “Weak at the Knees.”
Coming from a jazz-oriented foundation, Sam Carter appeared on Slave releases through 1990 and later transitioned to a long career working in higher education.
