Featured in TIR Episode 299 (Part 2 of 2): Trumpet player Hollie Farris, best known for several decades of recording and performing with the Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown! First connecting with Brown in the mid-1970s and parting ways for a few years along the way, he eventually became musical director and continued working with Soul Brother No. 1 right up until his 2006 death.
His recording career with Brown included latter hits like "Body Heat," "Get Up Offa That Thing," "Jam" and "The Spank." Among his other credits is playing with Steve Winwood and appearing in his 1989 music video, “Roll With I,” and working with singer Joss Stone. This part also finds Farris' sax-playing pal, Tom Pallardy, popping in to talk about their friendship and his new CD.

Flying out of the gate in the early 1970s as a teen, she released a trio of jazz-funk albums before putting together a run of six straight Top 30 R&B albums and seven Top 30 singles from 1978-1987. Those hit songs included the heavy grooving “Hang It Up,” “Haven’t You Heard” and “Forget Me Nots.”
Having also performed countless sessions for others, Rushen returned to her jazz roots in the late 1990s while also expanding into television and film. Among the notable artists she has worked with are Lenny White, Najee, Gerald Albright, Ronnie Laws, Sonny Rollins, Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, Stanley Clarke, Prince, Teena Marie, Paul McCartney, George Duke, Chaka Khan, Quincy Jones and Babyface, and she continues to do live shows.
