Featured in TIR Episode 325 (Part 1 of 2): Saxophonist and composer Thomas Lockett, an original member of one of the most talented, beloved and bad-ass funk bands of the 1970s and 1980s – Dayton, Ohio’s Slave. The group’s gifted musicians also included late, great bassist Mark Adams and guitarist Mark Hicks; multi-instrumentalist Steve Washington; horn player Floyd Miller; and later on, drummer-singer Steve Arrington, guitarist-singer Curt Jones and keyboardist Sam Carter – the latter four have all been featured on past TRUTH IN RHYTHM episodes.
Slave’s classic jams include “Slide,” “Just a Touch of Love,” “Stellar Fungk,” “Just Freak,” “Volcano Rupture,” “Watching You,” “Wait for Me,” “Stone Jam,” “Snap Shot,” “Baby Sinister” and “Sizzlin’ Hot.” Some of Slave’s members went on to more success with acts like Aurra & Steve Arrington’s Hall of Fame. Here, Lockett discusses the group's history, challenges and important legacy.
